Black women and Skin bleaching?

Why do black women bleach their skin? Is it because they want to think it will better their chances in society? Is it because they think the black skin colour is not as appealing as the white? I'm not talking about skin texturizers, often use to remove discoloration (burns, spots). Lately there is an increased number of cancer-cases relating to sking bleaching. Where did the need to bleach ones skin came from?

Black women and Skin bleaching?
You know what, ive been thinking exactly the same thing. I dont get it. People should be happy as they are.
Reply:I know a lot of African women bleach their skin. It kind of bothers me because we are strong women and we need to be proud of our skin color and heritage. It's funny because white women and men spend thousands on tanning to be darker and black and African women spend thousands on bleaching to be lighter. I guess it's just an internal issue that manifests because of the media's perception of beauty.
Reply:Most of the time it has to do with the effects of acne. When a Black woman experiences acne and gets blackheads usually they'll need a product like Ambi or another fading cream to eliminate those dark spots. But then you do have some that use it to make themselves lighter.

Look at BET videos and look at they type of women that Black men fall over (ie. Beyonce, Halle Berry) to understand why some women want to make themselves lighter.

To each her own.
Reply:i was not aware that black women were doing this. i am light skinned and i have always told people to be happy with their selves. i know a lot of girls who try so hard to be beyonce these days, its crazy. they actually go the distance as to getting their hair done like her and always, say....i look like beyonce dont i? I didn't know they were going this far with it. wow. that is saddening to know
Reply:not everybody is the same.. each of us has his/her own needs and wants.. the perspective on skin bleaching is similar to any skin care regimen one prefers.. whether it's antiacne, antiaging, hair dyeing, skin tanning or skin bleaching, they're all inclined on the same goals - better self esteem, aesthetic preferences or to correct a problem.. so there's actually nothing wrong with it.

my 2 cents. :-)
Reply:It's media crap feeding into the human subconscious. The best thing YOU can do is resist and keep holding on to what is YOU. Even if u feel alone at times - it is better to be aware then be another sheep in the herd. Ignorance is bliss but knowledge is power.
Reply:many balack women bleach their skin because in some parts of the world like brazil the lighter your skin tone the better your chances of being popular in society and also the lighter your skin colour for some strange reason the more attractive you are.

in india the poorest people are usually the darker skinned people. personaly i am of seychellois and ghanian descent and my skin colour is a cross between dark olive and light brown
Reply:Why judge? It's ok for a person to color their hair, stylize themselves with ink and peircings? It's a tad bit hypocritical to say that stylizing your skin is bad or good when the need to do it is the same as other body modifications.. -cough, breast augmentation.
