Question on hair dye/bleaching?

My hair is already dyed black (natualy its dark brown) and I'd like to dye it bright red.

I understand that I'd have to bleach my hair before dying it red but I've never used belach before! Will I have to take out the black dye before bleaching and will bleaching my hair damage it?

How long will I have to wait before I can apply the red?

Or would it be best to go to a salon and get it done profesonally?

Question on hair dye/bleaching?
you WILL need to use a colour remover to remove the artificial pigment you have put in with the black haircolour (use colorfix by robert craig if you live in USA or schwarzkopf igora phantom if you live in the uk) this will more than likely leave your hair orange, this is the perfect time to apply a red haircolour to gain maximum effect, you WON'T need to bleach at all, i reccommend using miss clairol by clairol colours, here is a swatch list: http://www.clairolprofessional.com/dispe... i would reccommend the 64R red oak
Reply:go to a salon. do not attempt it at home....
Reply:Go to a Salon and have a proffesional do it, if you screw it up yourself you will be sorry and very few stylists will touch it afterwards. If they do, they will charge you an exorbitant price for color correction and will inevitably turn your hair to mush.
Reply:bleaching black hair is always a nightmare... you will have to use a stong lightner... especially made for dark hair.. you can get things like that from places like superdrug etc... bleach the hair first then put on an intensive conditioner... then add the red. the only thing with red is that it often fades quickly so you will have to keep re-dying..

if your unsure then go to a hairdresser... but i cant imagine it being very cheap as its like getting your hair dyed twice in a row. xxx
Reply:Go to the hairdressers! otherwise you might end up having to walk around with a hat on for a year to cover up stripes or something.
Reply:ive done this before..and i suggest you go to a salon...they can do it alot easier without damaging you hair as much..it may not be the cheapest way but..you decide...healthy normal looking...or store baught looking
Reply:go to the hairdresser's, because bleaching at home may end with orange hair. seen it with a friend...

terrible colour!

and, yes, it will be stress for your hair, but the hairdresser can reduce that damage - at home, you won't be able to do so.
Reply:well if your hair is black then the red wont show, stripping is effective but damages your hair as does dyeing frequently......i think the best bet is to go to a salon.
Reply:Prob yes the salon would be better but if you get a pre lightner and lighten you hair with that, Leave it for on about 45 mins or so it will prob go a bright orange colour.

That is ok, doesnt look nice but its quite a good base to use for the red dye.

Afterwwards I would use a red permanent dye and then top it up with semi permanent or temprary colour booster in red to thicken the colour.

It should turn out fine.
Reply:Bleach is used the same way as hairdye, and the whole point of using it to get out the black is to get out the black, so you don't have to strip the black out beforehand. Yes, it is damaging, but not as damaging as you may think. As long as you condition between bleachings (and you'll need about two or three 1 hour bleachings with 40 volume bleach), your hair should be fine. You don't have to wait before you dye it after bleaching, but if you would like to make your hair that much healthier, I would say deep condition overnight after bleaching and dye the next day, just to give your hair a rest and revitalization. Remember to bleach the hair to a light blonde, and possibly use a toner to turn it white, or else it could turn out orange (hair turns a light yellow, and when dyed over with red, it may come out oranger than you would like). If you do not want to use a toner, I would say get a pinker red (it will say whether it is based on pink, red or orange in the ingredients.) Just follow all the directions on the box (and opefully my answer) and you will be fine, and any more questions, feel free to contact me. Hope this helps.
Reply:I have dark brown hair and I dyed my hair bright red a while ago.

First of all, I attempted to bleach it myself. I got orange hair.

So I went to the salon, and they got it yellow blonde. They warned me that having such dark hair meant that I would never get a white blonde and that each time my roots were done, they could not guarantee the same colour all over.

Well I went home, bought stargazer pillarbox red and applied myself (the salons would not have this shade). My bathroom was red for ages after that, and my face was red. I was a mess.

In addition, it looks stupid when your roots come in, as the red fades to pink, then there are bits of blonde and you have dark roots, you are far better getting it done by a professional - as they will do your blonde and red so you minimise the "I look stupid" time. Look at Tracy on big brother for a "how you don't want to look".

If you are serious about this, I would consider asking the salon doing the red as well - they could order the colour in for you - a salon once did this for me with blue dye. And Vidal Sasson have all sorts of colours available. you should go to a Vidal Sassoon training day - they do wonderful colours there.

Another point, once I was fed up of the red/pink/blonde look, I wanted brown again. I was advised never ever to go from blonde back to brown on your own, it will not turn out good.

And lastly, if your hair is already dyed, please do not attempt it at home, and do not be surprised if the salon give you warnings about how it might not come out well and ask you if you are sure you want to do this.

I love having individual hair colours, but will never do a "homer" again, as it all ends in mess.
Reply:You need to bleach your hair from black to a light brown before you can add red (Or else it won't turn out properly).

Lots of people say bleaching black hair is hard, but my hair is almost black in darkness and it bleached really nicely, but I don't suggest trying the job yourself anyway.

This is a big job you're attempting and because you've already dyed it once, there might be more chance of damage if you don't do it properly, so I suggest going to a salon.

Hairdressers know hair, it's their job.
Reply:Please go to a salon for this, as it is a major job! Get a consultaion first - ask a professional to look at your hair and possibly take a strand test to see if your hair can stand up to what is needed for this process.

Yes bleaching will damage your hair but it is possible to have treatments after to help repair it. Be aware that it may take a few bleach applications to strip enough colour - black is very difficult to remove (believe me I've been there!) As for the red dye you must bear in mind that red is the fastest colour to fade and over bleached hair - which is more porous (doesn't hold moisture/ dyes well) anyway - it may take 2 or 3 applications (not neccessarily on the same day) to get the colour to hold.

In my experience Wella professional range have some of the best reds available - much brighter with much less fading than a lot of the other brands. So if you can find a salon near you that uses Wella I recommend it.
